40 Years of Serving

40 Years of Serving

During this anniversary year, we are humbled to honor the legacy of those founders who were visionary and persistent in their efforts to create the County Cupboard in 1982. Because of what Eric and Evan Nord and Jeptha Carroll started, the impact on our community has been undeniable. We have distributed 174 million pounds of food and provided 144 million meals.

For those of us here today, our own personal reflections go back maybe one, two, five, or even twelve years; and for some, like Julie Chase-Morefield, personal memories and stories extend back seventeen years. In our many reflections, thoughts of so many people come to mind, including those who stepped up to help us at just the right time with an act of kindness or took charge of a project to make the difference in its success.

Many people volunteered their help along the way. Some won awards but many more friends and their deeds do not fit into a recognized category. Their help has ultimately played a great role in impacting our community, and we want to say thank you! As leaders at Second Harvest today, we are going to take time the rest of this anniversary year to reach out to some of these people to make sure they know how much we appreciate them and feel their help has been instrumental to a cause, project, or endeavor we engaged in during our time here.

Our history is as long ago as 40 years or as recent as yesterday’s activities. The staff along with so many wonderful people acting together create the mosaic that is Second Harvest.
